Summer in Pittsburgh is a mood: backyard BBQs, rooftop cocktails, weekend road trips, and all the Vitamin D we didn’t get from November to April. But while your calendar may be thriving, your skin? Not always so much.
Between sun exposure, sweat, sunscreen buildup, and general humidity overload, your face can go from dewy to distressed faster than you can say “pass the SPF.” The good news? A great summer skincare routine doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, simpler is better. Let’s break it down:
Keep It Light, Keep It Right
Hot weather means your skin is already working overtime. Adding thick moisturizers, 12-step routines, or anything heavy can clog pores and cause more harm than good. So strip it back to the basics. For morning: cleanser, lightweight moisturizer, sunscreen. At night: cleanser, optional serum (think hyaluronic acid or niacinamide), light moisturizer.
Product swap tip: Ditch the rich creams for gel-based or water-based moisturizers. Your skin still needs hydration, but it doesn’t need to suffocate. And if you’re not doing it already: keep your products in a mini fridge or pop a cooling roller in the freezer. There’s nothing more refreshing after a hot day.
SPF: Every Day. No Exceptions.
Let’s say this louder for the people in the back: You need sunscreen even when it’s cloudy. UV rays don’t care about cloud coverage or your excuses. Daily SPF is the best anti-aging product you’ll ever use, and it’s life-saving. What to look for: SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum, and non-comedogenic if you’re breakout-prone. And don’t forget to reapply! Powder SPF, mist sprays, or stick formulas make this super easy.
Summer breakouts? Hard pass.
Excess sweat + oil + sunscreen + bacteria = the perfect storm for clogged pores. But don’t panic! Prevention is easy with a few key steps. Use a gentle cleanser morning and night, keep facial wipes or micellar water in your bag for quick midday refreshes, change out of sweaty clothes ASAP after working out, and clean your hats and pillowcases more often in the summer.
Got Too Much Sun? Here’s the Aftercare Plan
Even with your best efforts, sunburns and heat irritation happen. When they do, the goal is to cool, calm, and hydrate. Reach for: aloe vera gel (real aloe, not the neon green stuff), sheet masks with chamomile or calendula, and hydrating mists.
Keep it light. Stay protected. Drink your water. And whatever you do, don’t skip the SPF.
