The Holy Grail of Anti-Aging

In a world obsessed with the latest skin care products and “skinfluencer” trends on social media, it’s easy to get lost in the sea of bad advice and trends. But no matter your gender or age, healthy skin isn’t about chasing fleeting fads.

It’s about finding a tailored routine that works for your skin type, lifestyle, and unique needs. So, let’s break it down: skin care for everyone—from the 20-somethings just starting their skin care journey, to the 50+ -somethings looking to rebel against the signs of aging.

In addition to the normal skin care staples like a cleanser and moisturizer, the bare minimum skin care routine for both men and women should include the “trifecta” or the “Holy Grail of Skin Care,” as I like to call it. The trifecta includes a mineral sunscreen, an antioxidant, and a topical vitamin A derivative.

The first component of the trifecta is a good quality mineral sunscreen. Most of our sun damage and aging comes from daily, incidental sun exposure, like brief walks outside or driving in your car. These passing exposures can add up overtime to cause significant signs of aging. Applying SPF everyday will preven this incremental damage from occurring and slow down the aging process. I encourage patients to avoid sunscreens containing a lot of chemicals, such as oxybenzone and avobenzone, as these ingredients degrade very quickly in the sun. Instead, look for pure mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide as the active ingredients. If you’re thinking about your parents’ zinc oxide from the 1970s, not to worry. Nowadays, many pure mineral SPFs are made for all skin types and don’t look chalky.

Second, all men and women should incorporate a topical antioxidant into their morning skin care routine. Common powerhouse antioxidants include vitamin C, vitamin E, ferulic acid, niacinamide, and resveratrol. Antioxidants are crucial in skin care because they help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals, which are unstable molecules generated by UV exposure, pollution, and other environmental stressors.  Free radicals break down collagen and accelerate aging. By fighting oxidative damage, antioxidants help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, while also brightening the skin. For best results, apply antioxidants in the morning before sunscreen to maximize their protective benefits.

The final component of the skin care trifecta is the application of a topical vitamin A product in the evening. This is applied after cleansing and is commonly known as a topical retinol or retinoid. These are potent skin care ingredients that help to stimulate collagen production, reducing fine lines, improving skin texture and tone, and minimizing pores. These products are infamously irritating for some, but when used correctly and under the guidance of a skin care expert, they are integral to slowing down the signs of aging and are well-worth the adjustment phase.

When it comes to skin care, trends will come and go, but the trifecta—mineral sunscreen, antioxidants, and topical vitamin A—will always be the gold standard. These three powerhouse ingredients work together to protect, repair, and rejuvenate your skin, no matter your age or skin type.

But remember, great skin isn’t just about products—it’s about consistency, expert guidance, and finding what truly works for you.

At SkinLaB and LaBrasca Plastic Surgery, we take the guesswork out of skin care and offer tailored treatment regimens that are backed by science. So instead of searching for next trend or miracle serum, trust in the proven essentials—because when it comes to skin care, you’ve already found the Holy Grail.
