In a world where stress, anxiety, emotional exhaustion, and disconnection have become increasingly common, many people are searching for something deeper than traditional therapy alone. They are searching for understanding, compassion, and genuine human connection. For patients throughout the Pittsburgh region, that search often leads to Dr. Katie Stewart.
Known for her thoughtful, client centered approach to psychotherapy, Dr. Stewart has built a practice rooted in the belief that the therapeutic relationship itself is one of the most important components of emotional healing. Her work combines clinical expertise with warmth, empathy, and a deeply individualized understanding of each patient’s unique experience.
Patients are drawn to Dr. Stewart not only for her professional background and extensive clinical training, but also for the calming, supportive environment she creates within her practice. Her therapeutic style blends psychodynamic theory, cognitive behavioral techniques, and eastern philosophies into a holistic approach designed to help individuals better understand themselves, process life experiences, and build stronger emotional foundations. At the core of her work is the idea that healing begins when people feel truly heard.
Dr. Stewart’s path into psychology was anything but conventional. Before entering the mental health field, she initially pursued a career in the arts an experience that would later shape her appreciation for creativity, expression, and the complexities of the human condition.
She eventually enrolled at Chatham University, where she earned her Master of Science degree in Counseling Psychology, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2006. During her graduate studies, she completed three field placements at Mayview State Hospital in Pittsburgh’s South Hills. It was there that she discovered her passion for clinical work and developed a profound respect for the power of listening and shared human experience. Inspired to continue her education and deepen her clinical training, Dr. Stewart pursued a Doctor of Psychology degree in Counseling Psychology through the inaugural PsyD program at Carlow University, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2011. Her acceptance into the program also included a graduate assistantship, opening the door to another unexpected passion: teaching.
While completing her doctoral coursework, Dr. Stewart taught undergraduate classes and served as a teaching assistant for master’s-level courses, all while balancing intensive year-long practicum experiences. Her first practicum took place at Allegheny General Hospital, where she performed neuropsychological evaluations in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Her second practicum was completed at Carnegie Mellon University Counseling and Psychological Services, focusing on outpatient psychotherapy.
Those experiences ultimately led to an internship at Torrance State Hospital, further strengthening both her clinical skills and therapeutic philosophy. Near the conclusion of her internship, Dr. Stewart accepted a full-time faculty position at Carlow University, allowing her to continue teaching while completing a post-doctoral fellowship to obtain clinical licensure hours. Although she enjoyed academia, she realized that direct work with patients remained the true center of her professional purpose.
After two years in higher education, Dr. Stewart made the difficult decision to step away from full-time teaching in order to devote more energy to clinical care. She later returned to Allegheny General Hospital, where she balanced patient care with mentoring Psychology Interns and Psychiatry Residents through lectures and clinical supervision. Her dedication to both patient care and education earned her the distinction of Teacher of the Year for the Department of Psychiatry at Allegheny General Hospital during the 2015–2016 academic year.
Today, Dr. Katie Stewart’s private practice reflects the culmination of that journey – a space intentionally designed to embody her therapeutic philosophy of safety, connection, understanding, and healing. Her credentials reflect not only academic excellence, but also a commitment to lifelong learning and integrative wellness. In addition to her psychology training, Dr. Stewart earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from New York University, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 2001.
She is credentialed as a Health Psychologist by the National Register of Health Service Psychologists and maintains active memberships with the American Psychological Association, the Pennsylvania Psychological Association, the Greater Pittsburgh Psychological Association, and the International Coaching Federation.
Further expanding her holistic approach to healing, Dr. Stewart completed the Professional Coach Certification Program at Duquesne University in 2024 and currently holds the designation of Associate Certified Coach through the International Coaching Federation.
Her additional certifications include Yoga Alliance RYT®-500, Certified iRest® Yoga Nidra Meditation Teacher, Reiki Master training in the Gendai Reiki Method, Certified Breathe to Heal Facilitator, and a Perimenopause Certificate through Perry Academy.
Beyond her clinical practice, Dr. Stewart also shares her expertise with the broader Pittsburgh community as the resident psychologist on Talk Pittsburgh, where she appears live each month discussing topics such as relationships, anxiety, mindfulness, emotional wellness, fear of happiness, anhedonia, gossip culture, stress management, personal growth, and modern approaches to mental health and healing. For many patients, it is this unique combination of intelligence, compassion, creativity, and multidimensional healing practices that continues to set Dr. Katie Stewart apart.
