North Hills Spotlight

Love city living but sometimes crave a break from the constant hustle and bustle? You're not alone—hundreds of thousands of people call the North Hills home for that very reason.

Just north of Pittsburgh, the aptly named North Hills region offers the perfect blend of suburban charm and urban convenience. This area, which includes communities like Ross Township, McCandless, Shaler Township, Hampton Township, and Franklin Park, strikes a balance between tranquility and easy access to the city, making it a top choice for families and professionals alike.

A Rich History

Similar to many neighborhoods around the ‘Burgh, the North Hills boasts a rich history, dating back to its early settlement in the 18th century. Initially inhabited by Native American tribes, the area began to see European settlers, mainly Scots-Irish and German immigrants, in the mid-1700s. They were drawn to the fertile land and strategic location.

Ross Township, one of the earliest established communities in the North Hills, was founded in 1809 and named after James Ross, a prominent Pittsburgh attorney and U.S. Senator. Throughout the 19th century, other townships were developed, growing steadily due to their proximity to Pittsburgh and the development of key transportation routes.

Today’s North Hills Living

Today, the North Hills region is known for its thriving community, where historical roots meet modern living.

Shopping and dining in the North Hills are both quite impressive. Ross Park Mall serves as a premier shopping destination with major retailers like Macy’s, Nordstrom, and Lego. Nearby, The Block Northway and McCandless Crossing offer a diverse mix of shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues, creating lively hubs that cater to all tastes and preferences. Residents enjoy an array of dining options, from gourmet restaurants to charming local eateries. These bustling commercial centers not only fuel the local economy but also elevate the quality of life, offering convenient and fun options for everyone.

Throughout the year, locals look forward to a calendar packed with events and festivals that celebrate everything from local art and music to food and heritage. Popular events like the annual Summer Arts Festival, Oktoberfest celebrations, and holiday parades showcase local talent. Each summer, thousands gather at Hartwood Acres Park for free concerts, making it a lively hot-spot for music lovers. Meanwhile, farmers’ markets are a cherished staple in the North Hills, where residents can purchase fresh, locally grown produce and handmade goods.

Turning to the great outdoors, North Park stands as the crown jewel of the area. This expansive 3,000-acre park spanning multiple local townships offers a wealth of recreational activities. From hiking scenic trails and biking along paved paths to boating on the tranquil lake or enjoying a round of golf, North Park serves as the perfect destination for both casual visitors and seasoned adventurers. Its picturesque setting and extensive facilities make it a sought-after destination.

So, next time you’re contemplating seeking a place that combines the best of city living with suburban peace, the North Hills might just be your perfect match.
